Rodentia
Here are some of the highlights from the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History’s exhibit featuring a variety of rodent skeletons, from common to unusual. Included are the largest rodent, the Capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris), and the most primitive extant rodent species, the mountain beaver (Aplodontia rufa). Interestingly, the mountain beaver has a forked baculum, and lacks the large infraorbital foramen for masseter muscles indicative of all other rodents. (This post about our Rothschild’s porcupines [Coendou rothschildi] discusses the enlarged infraorbital foramen on some rodents and porcupines).

Asleep! O Sleep A Little While, White Pearl!
Asleep! O sleep a little while, white pearl!
And let me kneel, and let me pray to thee,
And let me call Heaven’s blessing on thine eyes,
And let me breathe into the happy air,
That doth enfold and touch thee all about,
Vows of my slavery, my giving up,
My sudden adoration, my great love!John Keats
